Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery" was established by French government.

Later, on 13th July 1964, the college was upgraded as a Regional Centre and was re-named as Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

JIPMER is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
