Education Profile Pondicherry

Away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, Pondicherry is a quiet little town on the southern coast of India. The Pondicherry (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2006 has renamed the Union Territory as Puducherry. In the past few years, Pondicherry has become a major educational destination in southern India. Renowned institutes like the Jawaharlal Institute of Post -Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and Pondicherry University have helped considerably to raise the standard of higher education in Pondicherry.

The Government of Pondicherry is laying special emphasis on IT education. The GovernmentÂ’s IT policy is aimed at creating an intelligent society to raise the literacy rates and to generate human resources with advanced skills and expertise in the same field. The Government also aims to equip all educational institutions with Computers and Internet connectivity. All educational institutions of higher learning will be networked together to provide quality education.

Primary education in the Union Territory (UT) of Pondicherry has been made free and compulsory. Schools in the UT use Tamil, French and English as their medium of teaching and study. French education is also provided to the students. The UT has a literacy rate of 82% which is comparatively higher that the average literacy rate of the country.
